Engine repair without the tow.

Misfires, overheating, leaks, belts and tune-ups handled at your home or job site. You hear what it needs and what it costs before anything comes apart.

What the engine is trying to tell you

  • It shakes at idle and the check engine light is flashing. That is a misfire happening right now: plugs, a coil, an injector or a vacuum leak. A flashing light is the one that means stop driving it, because unburned fuel is cooking the catalytic converter.
  • The temperature gauge is climbing. Thermostat, water pump, a split hose, a radiator or a fan. Shut it off before the needle reaches the red. Overheating is how a small repair turns into a head gasket.
  • Spots on the driveway. Usually a gasket or a seal that has hardened with age and heat. Most are not urgent, but an engine that is low on oil does not give much warning.
  • A squeal on startup. A worn belt, or a tensioner that has gone weak. It is a small repair now and a breakdown when it finally lets go, since that one belt runs the alternator and the water pump on most engines.
  • Ticking or knocking that was not there last week. Check the oil before you drive it again, and call.

What gets done in your driveway

Most of what goes wrong with an engine is bolted to the outside of it, and all of that is normal mobile work.

  • Tune-ups. Spark plugs, coils and filters, done to the schedule for your engine.
  • Cooling system. Radiators, water pumps, thermostats and hoses.
  • Belts. Serpentine belts, tensioners and idler pulleys.
  • Leaks. Valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets and the seals that drip.
  • Sensors and vacuum leaks. The parts that set a check engine light and make it run rough.

Some engine work is bigger than a driveway afternoon. If yours is, you hear that after the diagnosis, along with your realistic options, before any money goes into parts.

Not sure what is wrong? Start with the diagnosis

Engine parts are expensive to guess with. A misfire can be a plug, a coil, an injector or a compression problem, and replacing them one at a time until it stops is the costly way to find out.

That is why engine repairs here start with a proper diagnostic. We pull the codes, test the part the code points at, and tell you what is actually wrong. Then you get a quote on that repair, and only that repair.

Summer traffic on 501 runs a cooling system harder than anything else it will see all year. A system that is only just keeping up in March is the one steaming on the shoulder in July, so a rising gauge is worth a call the first time you see it.

Common questions

Questions we get asked.

Can you really repair an engine in a driveway?
For most repairs, yes. Plugs, coils, belts, water pumps, radiators, hoses, gaskets and sensors are all bolted to the outside of the engine and come off with hand tools. If a job is too big for a driveway, we tell you before any work starts.
My check engine light is flashing. Can I keep driving?
No. A flashing light means the engine is misfiring right now, and driving on it can ruin the catalytic converter. Park it and call. A light that stays on steady is less urgent but still needs to be read.
Do you do tune-ups?
Yes. Spark plugs, coils when they are due, and filters, plus a look at the belts, hoses and fluids while the hood is up.
It overheated once and seems fine now. Should I worry?
Yes. Engines do not overheat for no reason, and the next time is usually worse. Finding a weak thermostat or a small leak now is a much smaller repair than what a second overheat does.
