Check engine light diagnosed at your house.
A code is a clue, not an answer. We come to your driveway, pull the codes, test the parts the code points at, and tell you what is actually wrong before you spend a dollar on it.
What a trouble code actually tells you
A stored code names the circuit or system that reported a problem, not the part that failed. P0171 says the engine is running lean. That can be a vacuum leak, a dirty mass air flow sensor, a weak fuel pump, or a leaking injector. Five different repairs, five different prices, one code.
The free scan at the parts counter reads that code and stops there. It is a starting point and it is genuinely useful, but it is not a diagnosis, and replacing the first part the code mentions is how people spend three hundred dollars and still have the light on.
How we diagnose it in your driveway
- Full scan, not just engine codes. We pull stored and pending codes from every module that will talk, plus freeze frame data showing what the engine was doing the moment the fault set.
- Live data while it runs. Fuel trims, sensor voltages, and misfire counters tell us whether the fault is happening right now or whether it happened once in traffic three weeks ago.
- We test the part before we condemn it. A sensor gets checked against spec before it gets replaced, so you are not paying for parts that were fine.
- You get the price before the wrench turns. We tell you what it needs, what it costs, and what happens if you leave it. Then you decide.
Lights that mean stop driving, and lights that can wait
Not every check engine light is an emergency, and knowing the difference saves you money and saves your engine.
A flashing check engine light means raw fuel is going into the exhaust and the catalytic converter is cooking. That one is not a wait-until-payday problem. Pull over and call. A steady light on a car that drives normally usually can wait a few days, though the longer an emissions fault sits, the more likely it takes the converter with it.
If the light came on with the temperature gauge climbing, or with the oil light, shut it off. We will come to it.
