It will not crank. We come to it.
Batteries, alternators and starters tested and replaced wherever the car decided to quit on you. We test the whole charging system first, because a new battery does not fix a dead alternator.
Will not crank and will not start are two different problems
This is the single most useful thing to know before you call anybody, and it changes what the repair is.
Will not crank means you turn the key and the engine does not spin. You get a click, a rapid clicking, or nothing. That points at the battery, the cables, the starter, or the connections between them.
Will not start means the engine spins over normally but never fires up. The battery is doing its job. Now you are looking at fuel, spark, or something telling the computer not to run.
Tell us which one it is doing when you call and we show up with a much better idea of what we are walking into.
Why we test before we sell you a battery
- Batteries get blamed for alternator failures constantly. A weak alternator slowly drains a good battery. Put a new battery in without fixing the alternator and you are stranded again inside a week, out the cost of a battery.
- A load test tells the truth. A battery can read 12.6 volts sitting still and still collapse the moment the starter pulls on it. Voltage alone is not a test.
- We check the charging output with the engine running. That is how you separate a bad alternator from a bad battery from a corroded ground strap that costs almost nothing to fix.
- Corroded cables mimic every one of these. Sometimes the actual repair is cleaning a connection, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a part.
Summer heat kills more batteries here than winter does
Most people assume cold kills batteries. Cold is what exposes a weak one, because a cold engine is harder to crank. But the damage is done in the heat.
High under-hood temperatures accelerate the chemistry that wears a battery out and evaporate the fluid inside it. On the Grand Strand that means a battery that lived through two or three summers is on borrowed time, and the first cool morning is when it finally refuses.
If yours is cranking slower than it used to, that is the warning. It is a much cheaper problem in your driveway than in a parking lot at midnight.
